Our journey to the Netherlands started with traveling from Vienna to Munich on October 21st in the early morning. Around noon we arrived in Germany and met up with the Head of Development from MovieTech’s ABC Products to pick up a Speedy Crane System. We packed everything in our car with a small trailer and headed to Uden (NL), where we’ ve had booked a room for one night. At 9 pm, 1300 kilometers and 14 hours later we were breathing 100% Dutch air and prepared our equipment parts for their mission on the next day.

October 22nd started at 6am with breakfast and checking out from the room. Shortly later we met our military escort Paul near the gates of Volkel Airbase, which is covering a quite huge area and is an absolute eye/ear candy for jet aircraft loving people.
After a very warm and affectionate reception we received an important security briefing, as well as we’ ve been showed different “safe” and possible camera positions on the airbase. The sounds from departing F16 jet aircrafts are awesome, especially when you can hear and watch them nearby the airstrip. Earth under your feet starts kind of quaking and your ears can’ t really deal with the noise, even with safety plugs in. After a few seconds of watching up in the sky our heart blood started coloring orange automatically. This feeling accompanied us nearly the whole day and is still unforgettable for us.

Our Team consisted of three people – head of the Production Crew Wolf, Doris and me. We filmed the parked F16 with our ABC Products Camera Crane and gained unique footage, as well as we could capture the ground crew during the maintenance and preparation of the Jet for the following display. The interview with the 2010/2011 display pilot Cpt. Tobias “Hitec” Schutte was also a very interesting part of the production work. After Lunch on the Airbase, Hitec did an outstanding flight display over Volkel Airbase and showed again his extra ordinary handling skills of this aircraft. Being as close as possible with the cameras was worth every effort and we are really looking forward to present you this footage in our film. Keep your ear plugs ready :)

Equipment stored away in car and trailer again, we left Volkel Airbase on late afternoon and after a long night straight over Europe’ s highways we arrived Saturday 4 am back home in Vienna. Finally we’d like to thank the Royal Netherlands Airforce for having worked with us, as well as we would like to thank the RNLAF F16 Demo Team and all the people we met at Volkel Airbase, for their absolute professionalism and guest friendliness.

When you’re filming fast objects in the air, you need to be as close as possible to catch real good frames. And so we had to be imaginative again with finding good camera positions for our production. Unfortunately did no Hollywood Camera Helicopters support us this time, that’s why the whole footage we’re presenting is “handmade” again. Our creative decision was to simulate air-to-air records while climbing up specific Austrian mountains and then filming Patrick’s Plane from the top. click on the  thumbs to view the pictures!

The airspace under us was finally big enough for our Aviator -  he was able to fly his displays perfectly and flirted a little bit with our cams…

Wolf and I walked up the “Drachenwand” (1176m) in Salzburg, which is known by many Austrian BASE jumpers, and the “Eisenerzer Reichenstein” (2165m) in Styria, equipped with 3 cams and suitable mounts.  Hiking is fun, but it’s even more fun, when you keep in mind that you’ve the chance to catch some unique frames for your production when you reach the top with all the stuff in your backpacks. We started to walk up in the early morning (7 am) and 2,5 hours later we arrived at the Reichenstein Lodge right under the peak.

As there were still thick fog walls busting up the edges of the mountains, we had to wait a few hours for clear sky. We used this time to explore the area aroud the peak and positioned the cameras as far as possible away from each other, and on the highest points in sight to cover a big air space for Patrick’s Powered Aerobatics Display. It worked out really well, especially at the Drachenwand we got rare close up frames from the flying plane and could nearly watch his instruments from our positions. It affords more than 100% knowledge and of course perfect handling skills too for a pilot to do such stunts close to the rocks of a mountain. The conditions in the Alps are always kind of special for a pilot, as they can change immediately and cause turbulences, even during performing a maneuver.

AIRSTRIPPED.COM Aviator Patrick Strasser was born 1984 and began flying at the age of 16. He started with gliders followed by his first championships in soaring. These years have been very important for Patrick to get used to the element air and it didn`t took long time he realized that he is part of this fantastic element.

Moving in the third dimension and to control a plane in every situation is the most impressive thing for him. After two years of flying Gyrocopters he started with powered aerobatics, one of the most challenging flying sports. Carrying out aerobatic displays at a speed between 0 km/h and 400 km/h and an acceleration of more than +/- 10 G let Patrick feel free and is the sense of his life. The aircraft has more than 300 horsepower and is a real high-tech product but only the pilot in it makes these maneuvers possible. Since 2010 he is holder of a commercial pilot license and has a total flight experience of about 1500 hours (year 2010) in more than 50 different plane types.

The Interview with Patrick was filmed at his Homebase in Timmersdorf. We had nice autumn afternoon sunshine, and as everything was done Wolf took a seat as a Passenger in Patricks Aircraft for some additional shots during a display flight. He loved the feeling, even if it was sometimes hard for him to hold the camera in his hands and film during an acceleration of more than a few +/- G’s. The work with Patrick was huge fun and absolute great. We’re looking forward to present you the claimed footage in our movie.

August 6th – 9th, 2010

After 5 hours in the car, Martina, Juergen and Wolf arrived on Friday noon at the Kecskemet Airbase to be prepared for the arrival of the Dutch F-16 Jets. Exactly on scheduled time, the Orange Lion appeared in the Hungarian sky and showed a perfect landing. We met the Royal Netherlands Airforce Team Coach Captain Marcel “Gipsy” Masman, to exchange detailed plans and information about our film project and the further production steps. On Saturday and Sunday, we split our team for different camera positions and filmed the display of pilot Tobias “Hitec” Schutte. During the day we got burned by the sun, but our evenings in Hungary were quite relaxed. We enjoyed the dinner in restaurants and had once again some cosy nights in our sleeping bags. On Monday, the F-16 Team was heading to the Netherlands again. Wolf gained really great footage from their departure. In October we will travel to the Netherlands for additional production shots with RNLAF F-16 Demo Team. Meeting the Crew at their Homebase is a great honor for us, and we’re very much looking forward to finally present you those frames. “One Team – One Mission”, that’s not only the statement written on the wings of the Dutch F16 Jet, it’s also what we carry in our hearts for the AIRSTRIPPED.COM project…

We are very happy to inform you, that the Royal Netherlands Airforce F-16 Demo Team is now part of the AIRSTRIPPED.COM production!
It’s a special honor for us to have the Dutch Team with it’s orange lion aboard our film. The pilot Cpt. Tobias “HITEC” Schutte is assigned to the 323 Squadron and has gained more than 1100 hours on the F-16 since he started his flying career in 1999.

Be prepared for some spectacular airborne scenes, combining the military profession, a high performance jet powered aircraft and the experience of a well trained display pilot!

June 11th – 13th, 2010 Croatia’s highest bridge crosses a wide valley on the Buje-Vodnjan highway between Medaki and Kanfanar. Known as the Limska Draga, the viaduct consists of a large steel box girder spanning several tall reinforced concrete piers, one which rises 394 feet (120 mtrs) in height. It  was built from 1986-1991 and is 552 mtrs long. After 6,5 hrs in the car we arrived and prepared our camera equipment as well as our camp near the bridge. The Sun burned down with 97°F (36°C)  and three hot outdoor days were waiting for us.

Checking the wind on the bridge for the first time, showed that Wolf’s McConkeys could become a little complicated, or even need to be canceled. Sirocco, the  Mediterranean wind that comes from the Sahara, was blowing with 8-10 knots. That’s no popblem for an experienced Base Jumper like Martin, but a McConkey/Rollover Jump with a Paraglider requires very very calm conditions.

We also checked the wind in the following night around 3 am, and met a security guy who thought we were oil thiefs ;) as there is a construction site beside the bridge at the moment, he was protecting. He told us, that the wind will never stop,  but slows down at dusk and dawn. Saturday morning started with another wind-check,  fresh cooked coffee for me :) and an open air breakfast for the rest of the team around 5:30 am.

Martin made his first jump at 6:30 am. Beside checking the wind, there are several other important things a paragliding pilot has to do when he is making a McConkey. Walking along a high way bridge with a big colorful Paragliding Canopy in your hand needs to be fast, as the croatian police also knows what extremesports people love to do there ;)

Finally – after reaching the exit point – Wolf had to sort his lines and bring the hanging down canopy in the best shape for the jump. He had good wind conditions and showed us 2 great Rollovers with his Ozone Vulcan. Well, a camera team needs to be creative in his very own way, and so we made a special wood construction for the bridge cams, to catch better angles. This thing was as heavy as it could be, carried by Wolf and Jürgen over the bridge … into the sunset.

We also made interview scenes and some frames from the surrounding area, additional footage which is needed too for a well film cut… On Sunday we all went back home after successful 3 days of production work. Another 7 hrs road trip, burned from the sun, but with good footage in our bags :) I’d like to thank our team for the great time and of course our film partners for providing such reliable and perfect equipment! Well, doing a shooting with a simple goose feather sounds very simple. But as we

mentioned (after spending hours and hours, days by days outside, playing with

this little flyweight)  it is not that easy. It’s quite hard work ;)

Our greatest enemy was the wind. On the one hand we needed him for

the right movement of our little aviator – and on the other hand, it was

a problem, cause as you know, you can’t tell him how much to blow and of

course in which direction.

Running with a camera in your hand – behind, under or above a flying goose

feather is an very special experience in the life of a film making person.

Patience is the most important thing, after perfect knowledge of how to

handle your equipment.

Our patience with nature has been rewarded with extraordinary daylight

conditions, and we got awesome footage from and with our little aviator.

Wolf and I spent a lot of time on producing the feather scenes, because we

know, that  this is another stuff, that hasn’t been presented in any other

aerial extremesports movie so far. Special audience deserves special

frames. That’s what it is! We are very much looking forward to present you

some outtakes of this scenes in Teasers or Trailers soon!

9-10. Oct and  16-19 Oct 2009

After spending a weekend in Slovenia, we met again at Dachstein for

a Wingsuite Base shooting. It was the 3rd time in 2009 we walked up

this mountain to collect some Wingsuit footage.

The weather changed immediately after we started walking up. Strong winds

(50km/h – gusts with 70km/h) and an exit inside the clouds are the wrong

conditions for a wingsuit jump from the very top of this 3000m peak. So Martin

and Wolf decided to go down again and to change the location. A few hours

later we arrived at “Trisselwand” near the Altauseer lake in the famous

Salzkammergut.

The weather was much better there, and so Martin did pretty nice jumps during

the rest of this weekend.

Equipped with bodymounted cams he showed us once again how it feels to

fly like a bird. As usual we tried out different camera positions during theese

jumps (back/front/left/right). We roped down the cliff and could catch

some amazing bird view shoots from the proximity wingsuite action too.

Last weekend we spent 3 Days at Mondsee/Drachenwand again. We carried

up our 9-meter-ABC-Crane to the exit and could make some unique crane shoots from

the exit jumps. Hour by hour of work we finally got second for second

banned of our base film footage.

October 2nd-5th, 2009

The “Triglav” is known as Slovenia’s highest mountain. On the first weekend

of October we changed parts of the named area into another playground for

our airstripped.com film production.

After a 4 hour walk up – the crew collected some thousend of altitude-meters

until the exits appeared – we finally have been rewarded with a beautiful

landscape and some really breathtaking views.

Martin did great flights and so we got more fantastic Wingsuit footage!

Special Thanks goes out to our Slovenian B.A.S.E Jump friends, for showing us

some secret and mostly unknown exits up there!

As you can see on this pics, cams were placed on body and helmet again.

We always try hard to provide stable and of course high quality frames!

Well, and after four days up there, we decided to change sleeping bags and

tinned fish into a shower and some real food ;)

We moved back to Austria and shot again at the Dachstein area.

Dobersberg/Austria, 25th – 26th July, 2009

Peggy Krainz and Friedrich Walentin are also part of airstripped.com. The

wingwalkers team from Germany grants breath-taking moments for everybody

who’s watching them from the ground :D

We shooted with Peggy and Friedel two days in Dobersberg. Peggy’s numerous

stunts gave us the chance to get unique footage for our movie. While Friedel

handles the plane, Peggy changes her positions. Once she’s standing on the top,

then lying between or sitting on the wings…

The flown aircraft, a Boeing Stearman E75 powered by a 9 cylinder – 450 hp

Pratt & Whitney radial, manufactured 1942 – has been restored by Friedel

and Peggy in hundreds of loving working hours.

With passion for flying everything is possible. Even to fly loopings with an

almost 70 years old plane while having a lady standing outside on the wings.

It was a distinct pleasure to shoot with people who are professionals, but

still haven’t lost the fire in their eyes when they talk about flying or just

think about the next stunt they plan together.

July 6th – 15th, 2009

Monday afternoon we met the american boys in Innsbruck near the railway station. Both of them

just arrived from their quite long journeys, but still full thirst for action. Matt and Mike are our

Xtreme Aviators from the United States. Please see airstripped.com for their detailed profiles.

We have planned some flights in the area of Zugspitze for the first days but the weather

conditions were rather useless. So we decided to move to Mayrhofen and then to Hallstatt,

were the guys showed some action flying down from the Ahornspitze and Krippenstein. It

was pretty hard to get some good scenes from that spot, as the area was mostly to flat for our

speedflying-pro’s.

We had to find a mountain that really rock’s, as time was passing by and the weather forecast

predicted rain and strong winds for the whole week.

The next day we left Hallstatt and travelled to the Grimming, wich is a mostly unknown

mountain for speedflyers.

We had good conditions, and so our helicopter brought Matt and Mike to the top,

were they showed some really good action for our cameras when maneuvering down.

After that day we traveled to Villach, as the Dobratsch mountain was another spot

for flying we had in our mind.

On top of the Dobratsch at 2165 meters there is a little church, were the guys started

from. You can see it on the image above on the left side of the antenna. This spot was

really awesome to fly, but it also had some bad secrets for us: No cablecar and no road to the top.

So we had to walk up and bring up all our stuff in backpacks. Including the 9-meter

camera-crane from abc products…

The good news: It was was worth climbing up there. We got really awesome footage from the flights,

and we also found some nice locations for the interviews.

Finally we’d like to thank Matt and Mike for their great job and staying 9 days with us.

It was a pleasure for us to work with them. Both are speedflying professionals and travelling around

the world with the Ozone Team. Just  give  ‘em some mountains, a wing and a cam and they do the Rock ‘n’ Roll :)

We also like to thank  the crew members Lisa and Sandra for beeing part of the speedflying production,

For the fith time in history, Zell am See in Austria was venue for the paraglider acrobatics worldcup.  The 30 best pilots of the world as well as numerous new beginners followed the invitation of the organizers Club Ikarus Pinzgau. For us that weekend was another chance to get some great footage from our xtreme aviator Felix Rodriguez.

During the speedflying production work in Styria, we had organized a helicopter too.

So this was the perfect deal for our Base Jumpers, Martin and Martin. The heli pilot

brought them right up, about 100 meters above the top of the Grimming Mountain.

Both of them were equiped with head/body camera mounts, and we got some great

footage from their wingsuit flights down to the valley.

We’d like to thank again our helicopter-pilot Mike from Heli-Service Salzburg

for his great job and the team work during this prodcution work!

Wolf and I went to the ornithological station in Korneuburg to visit and

film with another actor of our movie:

His name is “Zorro” and he is a Bald Eagle.

Together with the professional falconers we spent an afternoon and tried to

catch some good scenes of the bird.

As Zorro is a well trained, but still wild animal, it was a funny challenge to shoot with him.

It’s pretty hard to explain a bird, that the camera right in front of him will not hurt him ;-)

We shooted with Zorro, because it was important for us to integrate a small part of the

evolution story behind flying in our movie.

Hundreds of years ago people around the world watched the birds first and then started

to build their own flying machines…Today we use airplanes, paragliders and wingsuits…

How often do we think about were it all came from?

I just can recommend everybody who’s interested in wild birds to visit the

eagle station and watch them while they’re working with their animals.

It’s very impressive and instructive too.

Finally we’d like to thank again the falconers team in Korneuburg for their great job, and of course

the birds Zorro and Layla too!

Wolf and I spent 12 hours on the car and travelled to Chamonix – Mont Blanc (France)

to meet and shoot with the Master himself – Xtreme Aviator Felix Rodriguez.

He is the World Champion in Acrobatic Paragliding and a very

outstanding person. As official Ozone Team Pilot he attends

competitions around the world. Wolf and I call him the “acro-god” ;)

Felix does his sport every second with real passion – you
can feel it when you watch him in the air…

Five busy but really cool days granted us fantastic pictures. Lot’s of different
camera angles and different flight maneuvres had been arranged
to ban the best scenes on tape.

As Felix is a very cooperative sportsman, he contributed
himself and even checked his tapes after landing, to find
out how to improve the different camera postitions.

Chamonix is a cosy little town surrounded by nice paragliding
spots. You can use lots of different cable cars to get up and fly
down in each direction. Perfect thermal conditions guarantee
fun with your glider all day long.

The shooting with Felix was a pleasure and we’d like to thank
him and his family again for the warm welcome and the
support of airstripped.com.

Meeting the best acro pilot of the world is an unforgettable
experience. Stay tuned Felix :)

The first BASE jump shoots for airstripped.com in
Austria took place at the Rax Alps near Vienna.

Martin, Wolf and I went there to get some of the cameras
and other new purchased equipment tested and to make
sure it’s suitable to be used by the aviators. Last but not
least the check the quality of the pictures among unusual
conditions.

June 11th and 12th, 2009

Travelling Thursday noon from Vienna to Salzburg, means
to be two and a half hour on a tightly packed car. Ready for
the trip, Martina, Juergen and I met Martin and Wolf
at a car park right in front of the “Drachenwand” around
03.00 pm.
First of all, we had to organize a tarpaulin for our roost from
a nearly located farm, because the weather forecast predicted
hard times for us ;) much rain and strong wind is not that
thing you’Re looking forward to, when you’re sleeping on a
mountain…

Next step was to share out the equipment between five
persons. Including cameras, mounts, tripods, and of course
our 9-meter-version of the new ABC Products camera crane,
which is unfortunately wrapped in a very unwieldy bag, and
more than hard to carry – even in flat areas.

On the way with true gentlemen, the girls received
preferential treatment and so Martina’s and my backpack
contained only one camera with a mount, a sleeping bag, a
mat and some food for the next two days.

Two hours later we arrived on top of the “Drachenwand”.
It was one of these climbs, that let you really suffer some
of your sins and makes you thinking about your physically
fitness. Especially when you’re an untrained person, like
I am one. But the crew was staying together and it was
kind of teamwork to get finally all of us to the top.
With or without sudden feelings of faintness :)

We prepared a common roost near the so called “exit”.
Comfortable as possible and in a wind protected area.
Before the air was getting dark, we had to assemble the
crane at the exit point and make all the equipment ready
to use, because Martins first jump was planned for sunrise
around 05.00 am.

A more or less sleepless night caused by hard rain and
storms under the tarpaulin was followed by realizing that
the sunrise jump had to be cancelled because of the still bad
wind conditions.

Waiting for better weather, we did some trials on the new
camera crane. It was kind of a final rehearsal for all of us.

After 8 hours of waiting and checking the forecast again,
we decided to prepare for the descent.

Well, you can’t change when the weather god is in a bad
humor ;)
No jumps, no videos, but great two days with the crew
on top of a mountain. Thanks dudes !
